Shipping containers are undeniably robust, but that doesn’t mean they can survive against challenging weather conditions forever. With rust one of the most common concerns facing those who own shipping containers, several strategies can be implemented to ensure your shipping container remains in top condition for as long as possible. Here, we outline some of the reasons rust occurs and what you can do to keep it at bay.
Why Does Rust Occur in Shipping Containers?
Shipping containers are made from Corten steel, also known as weathered steel, with this remarkably durable material designed specifically to withstand corrosion better than other types of metal. However, there’s only so much this material can do, with the powerful combination of water and oxygen eventually leading to the creation of rust.
While there are many reasons why rust might begin to grow on your shipping container, most issues occur when it encounters standing water, saltwater or damage that allows moisture to gain access. While this is definitely concerning, you can use numerous techniques to protect and repair your shipping container.
Check for Moisture Regularly
To protect your shipping container from rust, you must always be on the lookout for problematic moisture. This means you should conduct regular checks of your container's interior and exterior, as you search for areas that need to be drained. For instance, you should climb onto the roof and see if any puddles have formed, while the container doors can also be a problem area. Meanwhile, you should look for places where damage or degradation has occurred, which may allow rust to form if not properly fixed.
Sandblast serious rust
If you discover that rust has managed to attach itself to your shipping container, sandblasting is one of the most effective ways to remove it. While it’s not the cheapest approach possible, sandblasting any heavily rusted areas means you can have complete confidence that the rust has been removed. Once the process is finished, simply repaint the affected area.
Consider using zinc paint
Painting a shipping container with zinc-based paint has proven to be an effective method for slowing the growth of rust. By having the zinc react with the surrounding oxygen and water instead of the metal underneath, your shipping container will remain protected for longer. Using a zinc paint that contains at least 90% dry zinc powder, you can initiate the process known as ‘cathodic protection’, ensuring your shipping container is secured against rusting.
